چکیده
Abstract This article studies you bet and related phrases when they are used as a parenthetical free-standing response. Drawing on range of corpora, we provide both contemporary historical perspectives the set pragmatic expressions that has largely escaped scholars’ attention. Synchronically, demonstrate colloquial American markers to express speaker certainty/affirmation or respond thanks. Diachronically, these hypothesized have developed out main clause usage with clausal complement (‘the matrix hypothesis’); however, our corpus evidence does not straightforwardly support this hypothesis. Instead, suggest multiple constructions might been involved in emergence markers, namely, wh -interrogatives (e.g. what will (that) …? ), modal may/can … clauses reduced You I do ).
